District A는 '테크노밸리'라 불리는 교외의 산업단지와 그 주변 신도시를 담은 시리즈이다. 'District A'는 도시가 확장되는 과정에서 반복적으로 생겨나는 어디에도 속하지 않는 비특정적인 장소를 가리킨다.
내가 일했던 공간은 흔히 아파트형 공장이라 불리는 테크노 밸리에 있었다. 효율을 위해 층층이 쌓아 올린 이 곳은 매끈한 표면의 거대한 우주선과 닮아있다.
도심에서 밀려난 산업 단지는 교외의 신도시에 자리를 잡았다. 테크노 벨리와 그 주변에는 도시 확장의 여러 단면이 겹쳐 있다. 모던한 공장 단지, 낡은 설비와 기술, 사람들이 공존한다. 그 옆으로는 여전한 하천이 흐르며, 아직 개통되지 않은 지하철역과 새 아파트 공사 현장이 동시에 존재한다.
옛것과 새것, 고요함과 분주함이 뒤섞인이 혼재된 이 공간은 특유의 분위기를 발산한다. 나는 한국적 도시 확장이 만들어내는 과도기적 장소성을 담아내고자 했다.
District A is a series depicting a suburban industrial complex known as a "techno valley" and the new town surrounding it. "District A" refers to the nonspecific, placeless spaces that repeatedly emerge in the process of urban expansion, spaces that belong nowhere in particular.
The place I worked was located in a techno valley, commonly called an "apartment-style factory." Stacked floor upon floor for the sake of efficiency, it resembles a massive spaceship with a smooth, seamless surface.
Industrial complexes pushed out of the city center have settled into new suburban towns. In and around the techno valley, multiple layers of urban expansion overlap: modern factory complexes, aging equipment and technology, and people all coexist. Alongside them, a stream still flows as it always has, while a subway station not yet in operation and a new apartment construction site exist side by side.
This mixed space, where old and new, stillness and busyness intermingle, gives off a distinct atmosphere. I sought to capture the transitional sense of place produced by urban expansion in the Korean context.
