Rediscovering Our Anchors: A Photographic Journey of Retired Middle-Aged Men
‘Re:sort, (2017 - 2022),’ captures the stories of a private veterans' community related to a retired battleship. I aim to describe the anxiety people face in a rapidly changing society and efforts to find their own place. ‘Re:sort’ signifies both the meaning of a resort as a leisure destination and the redefinition/reclassification of concepts/categories.
The middle age marks a period of encountering new turning points due to changes such as retirement, discharge, unemployment, and entrepreneurship. ‘Veterans' community’ served as a place for middle-aged men to reflect on the past and navigate their future amid their anxieties. Within this community, they engaged in conversations spanning a wide spectrum of stories, from reminiscing about their youthful days on the battleship to addressing the challenges of contemporary life, encompassing both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of their experiences.
I thoroughly traced the relationships, events, and objects intertwined with the retired battleship, such as albums cherished by someone, the retired ship awaiting a fresh start becoming a ship park , and the annual gatherings of the private veterans' community.
Through this work, by tracking a community formed around a retired battleship, I aimed to capture the courage of individuals grappling with their anxieties amidst the rapid societal changes. Now is the time for each person to discover their own resort.
